Paying for your new house

Paying for your new house By Bank Transfer into Notaire’s account: Payment for your new house is nearly always done by Bank transfer to the Notaire's account. Notaires do not often accept payments by cheque or cash as they have to comply with strict money laundering regulations.

You need not open a bank account in France for the house purchase: However, you will need one very soon after to pay for services, insurance etc.  Few estate agents are entitled to receive deposit pay...

The Weather

The Weather The Dordogne department (the boundaries are almost those of the Perigord ) has a surface area of 9200km2, third department in size in France behind Gironde and Landes. Dordogne is firmly in the south west quarter of France. It is a region of transition between the Massif Central and the Aquitaine basin towards which all its rivers flow. The department takes its name from the river Dordogne which flows across it from east to west.

South of the cricket line

South of the cricket line

South of the Cricket Line

Driving south from Limoges in Limousin, the landscape and architecture suddenly begin to take on a more southerly look. Instead of grey slate, the roofs become terracotta tiles with quaint sloping angles. Instead of grey granite, the walls become honey coloured limestone or rusty red sandstone. Cooler, greyer northern France is left behind and you enter Aquitaine and Dordogne , where in summer the crickets sing from dawn ti...

A Dordogne Diary, Winter 2009

A Dordogne Diary, Winter 2009

Autumn/Winter 2009. Mild temperatures and intermittent drizzle in much of November, interspersed with periods of brilliant warm sunshine and freezing nights in the run up to Christmas.

The gents from the local ‘chasse’ delivered part of their kill, as they do every year. This year it was a haunch of a deer, caught in our woods on Sunday, put straight into the freezer. Then the local firemen came round with their Christmas calendars and collecting bo...

Setting up a Campsite in the Dordogne

Setting up a Campsite in the Dordogne

As so often in France, these regulations may vary from region to region and you would be well advised to check out locally for any variations.

An authorisation is necessary as soon as there are more than 20 campers or 6 placements at a time. Under this quantity, for your land to be used by campers, you need to declare the usage at the local town hall (Mairie). In certain cases (eg Camping à la ferme), further permission may be granted once the dep...

Even if you are a UK resident and leave a legal will, the disposition of y...

A Quick Overview

A Quick Overview

France uses a civil legal system; that is, law arises primarily from written statutes; judges are not to make law, but merely to interpret it (though the amount of judge interpretation in certain areas makes it equivalent to case law). Basic principles of the rule of law were laid in the Napoleonic Code. In agreement with the principles of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen law...
